Clover tattoos

A four leaf clover tattoo is a symbol of good luck like other symbols - horse shoes or rabbit’s feet but still a four leaf clover stands special. Typically, connected with Ireland’s rolling hills and legends of leprechauns, the four leaf clover is basically closely related with the shamrock, which is considered a charm against evil. The difference is that a shamrock is quite common and only has three leaves and the fourth leaf is actually caused by a genetic mutation. As a result of this, one leaf is often smaller than the other three, but in media imagery and today’s pop culture all four leaves are of equal size.

Meaning of each of the leaves

-
Symbolically, one leave stands for hope, one for faith, one for love, and of course the last one for luck. The reason these plants are linked with luck most of all is possibly because of how rare they are. Many people have spent hours crawling through the grassy fields on sunny afternoons and still haven’t found one. Because four leaf clover tattoos are so common, there is a wide array of designs available for them ranging from solid green and plain, to sporting complex shading and texture with adornments like Ireland’s flag, a crown, or a white dove.

Many four leaf clover tattoos are decked up with flowers surrounding the actual clover to add some color and dynamics to the tattoo. Others feature ribbons or sashes encircling the clover and giving the tattoo a more august, even imperial appearance. And as the four leaf clovers indicate luck, it’s not at all uncommon to see the word ‘luck’ either above or below the clover in various styles of tattoos.

Facts about Four-Leaf Clovers

One of the reasons that a four-leaf clover is considered lucky is because of its immense rarity. The odds of finding a Four-Leaf clover are estimated to be at least 10,000 to 1. Because of the rarity of finding a true four-leaf clover, this has given rise to the expression, 'The luck of the Irish!'.

According to the legend, Eve carried a four leaf clover from the Garden of Eden, when she and Adam were expelled. It is not possible to grow or breed four leaf clovers. However, there are actually companies that clone four-leaf clovers, which are a genetic defect! Interestingly, in tattoos designs that are considered "Lucky", you will find Four-Leaf Clovers prominently displayed along with winning hands of playing cards, dice, rabbit's feet and other so-called "lucky" symbols!
