Chinese tattoos are well known for their use of symbols and complex characters. History of Chinese Tattoos


In Chinese language, the word 'tattoo' is referred to as "Wen Shen" or "Ci Shen". The term means to "puncture the body". The Chinese art of tattooing has been in practice for many years. There is a story behind this. According to a Chinese legend, a Chinese general Yueh Fei served the South Song Dynasty. Once, during the battle with northern enemies the Field Marshall under whom Yueh Fei served ,betrayed the South Song and supported the enemy camp. Frustrated and angry, Yueh Fei resigned from his job and returned home.

His mother then inspired him telling him that it his duty to protect his country, despite all obstacles. To remind him of his duties to his nation, she tattooed four Chinese characters on his back with her sewing needle. These characters, 'jin zhong bao guo', mean something like "Serve his country with ultimate loyalty." After this, Yueh Fei formed his own army to fight against the northern enemies.
