Itchy Skin




Does your itchy skin cause you embarrassment at times? Itchy skin makes you irritated not only physically but also emotionally. There are several factors that make your skin itchy. Food allergies, insect bites and skin diseases are the most common causes. To get rid of itchy skin use medicated anti-itch cream or lotion and avoid scratching as far as possible.

Causes that leads to Itchy Skin

  • Dry skin is one of the factors responsible for itchy skin. Dry skin is caused by hot or cold weather with low humidity levels, too much bathing, use of harsh motions and cream, prolonged use of air conditioning or central heating.
  • You can also have itchy skin because of skin conditions like inflammation of the skin, dermatographism, chickenpox, hives, scabies and lice. These above mentioned skin conditions only affect a particular area of your skin and you may have red, irritated skin, blisters and bumps.
  • Internal diseases like malabsorption of wheat, iron deficiency, thyroid problems, liver disease, kidney failure, anemia, and cancers like leukemia and lymphoma also lead to itchy skin. These diseases cause itching in the entire body.

  • During pregnancy some women experience itchy skin on the abdomen, thighs, breasts and arms.

Remedies for Itchy Skin:

  • You can try out the below listed remedies tips to reduce itching and soothe your inflamed skin.
  • Use a medicated anti-itch cream or lotion to the inflamed or scratched skin area. A nonprescription hydrocortisone cream with 1 percent hydrocortisone can for the time being reduce your itching problem. Diphenhydramine a nonprescription oral antihistamine will serve you the purpose if the itching is harsh.
  • Try not to scratch the itchy skin area as much as possible. To avoid scratching at night, you should cover the itchy area and cut nails.
  • Use cool and wet compresses on the affected area. To protect your skin from further scratching, use bandages to cover up the area.
  • Enjoy a cool bath. Put uncooked oatmeal or colloidal oatmeal and baking soda into your bath water to reduce itching.
  • To avoid irritation of skin you should wear smooth-textured cotton clothing.
  • Use mild soaps and perfumes. After bathing do use a good moisturizer on your skin.
  • To wash clothes, towels, and beddings use a mild and fragrance-free laundry detergent. Try to use the extra-rinse cycle of your washing machine.
  • It is better not to use substances like perfume, nickel, and cosmetics that may lead to irritation of your skin and allergic reaction.
