Pock Marks




Pock marks are crater-like scars left on a person's face, caused by acne. Pock marks are also caused by infections such as chicken pox. They are usually brown or pink colored scars. The size, frequency and type of pock marks are dependent on genetic factors. Pock marks are completely curable, if treated in the early stages.

Types of Pock Marks:


There are mainly two types of pock marks. The simple pock mark is usually a spot left on the skin. A simple pock mark is brown, pink or purple in color. The color signifies the prominence of acne or pimples.

The ice pick pock mark is usually a small crater in the skin where the lesion used to be. Ice pick pock marks generally left behind only by inflamed lesions, which may include nodules, pustules, or cysts. This may happen as a result infectious diseases like chicken pox, which leads to eruptive growth on the skin.

Treatment of Pock Marks:


Pock marks can be treated in a number of ways. Some of the common treatments for pock marks are Laser Treatments, Filler Substances, Punch Excision, Subcision, Dermabrasion, and Microdermabrasion.
  • Laser Treatments
    In laser treatment removal of outer layers of the skin takes place by ablative lasers. Scar tissues are burnt and the dermal collagen is stimulated reducing the amount of scar visibility. Laser resurfacing makes use of ultrapulsed carbon dioxide laser and erbium YAG.

  • Filler Substances Fillers are used for shallow, saucer-shaped pock marks. In this treatment pock marks are pumped up. This leads to lightening of the scars.

  • Punch Excision Punch Excision is effective for pock marks with hard, irregular jagged borders. The excision of pock marks with a sutured closure allows the dermatologist to bring the dermis back together, and thereby get rid of the ragged margins give the area a smooth line.

Prevention of Pock Marks:


To prevent ugly pock marks on your skin, you should wash your face with a gentle face wash. Avoid using soaps or scrubbers, as they aggravate the problem. Keep make up to a minimal. Use sunscreen lotion and carry an umbrella when going out in the sun.
