Liver Spots
Liver spots, also known as solar lentigines or age spots, are common occurrences that are associated with advancing age and exposure to the ultraviolet light of the sun. Flat brown, gray or black in color, these spots are harmless and do not possess any health threats.
These are flat oval spots that develop on the outer surface of the skin. Usually the spots are observed in areas that are exposed to the sunlight, like the feet, shoulder, face, hands and the upper back. Wrinkles, rough skin, and translucent skin are some of the associated conditions of liver spots.
Liver spots are caused by the excess generation of melanin, the dark pigment that gives skin its natural color. The accumulation of excess melanin is the main cause for the appearance of these spots. Exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun triggers the generation of melanin that leads to sun spots.
