Eczema




Eczema is a skin inflammation that is characterized by dry, itchy and red patches on the skin. It can affect adults as well as infants. Eczema can affect any body part – legs, face, elbows, feet, neck or ankles.

How to prevent eczema?

Eczema can afflict children as well as adults. In children, it is most often observed during the infant years. It is a hereditary disease that is sometimes passed on through the genes. But, it is not necessary that if you have a medical history of eczema in your family, you are likely to get affected. However, the presence of a gene coupled with the conditions, conducive to the appearance of eczema; may lead to the occurrence of eczema.

Eczema can be prevented by following some simple guidelines, some of which are listed below:
  • Sweat and overheating of the body should be avoided.
  • Chemical soaps and detergents can stimulate the condition.
  • Keeping your body moisturized keeps it hydrated and prevents scaly skin from appearing.
  • Stress, it is believed plays an important part in the occurrence of eczema.

Treatment for eczema

  • Refrain from scratching the affected area, this only serves to aggravate the condition.
  • Applying lotion or creams, that keeps the area moisturized is recommended.
  • For the itching, try a cold compress, it has a soothing effect, that reduces the itchiness.
  • Oral medication can be taken, it is however suggested that you consult a doctor before taking any such medication.
  • For children, keeping the body moisturized and avoiding sudden changes in temperature goes a long way in curing the condition.
