Discoloration of elbows and knees
Discoloration of elbows and knees can be distressing for those conscious about their appearance. These areas are more exposed to sun than other parts of our body and hence suffer more discoloration. However, with proper care and attention, discoloration of elbows and knees can be taken care of.
Discoloration of elbows and knees also occurs due to overuse of the limbs. During our everyday life, we use our limbs so much that often the skin on them becomes dry and discolored. A busy lifestyle often means that we cannot give due time for the care of our limbs, which increases the problem. Neglecting our arms, elbows and knees not only makes them discolored, it also causes flaking and chapping.
Treatment of discoloration of elbows and knees
Maintaining proper skin care regime is the key to the treatment of discoloration of elbows and knees. The skin has to be kept well moisturized all the time. Removing dead skin from the elbows is necessary as these accumulate to form discolored thick layers. A gentle exfoliating cream should be used regularly to clean the skin around the elbows and the knees.
As these areas are more exposed to the elements, they need more frequent care. Oil is a simple, but effective home treatment for discoloration of elbows and knees. Oils can be applied directly or before baths. A few oils that are good for discoloration of elbows and knees include almond oil, grape seed oil, olive oil, and lavender oil. Oils with artificial fragrances may have skin irritants that cause irritation and should be avoided.
Moisturizing the skin around the elbows, limbs and feet is essential, especially after baths, when the skin is still soft and moist. If your limbs are exposed to the sun for prolonged periods, using a good sun screen is a good idea. If you have oily skin, use a water based sun screen.
If the discoloration is too noticeable and is accompanied by other problems like chapping, cracking and irritation, consult a dermatologist without delay as these may be symptoms of some major skin problems.
