Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic Dermatitis is a skin ailment commonly found in babies and children. It is one of the many types of eczema and is also known as atopic eczema or simply eczema. Atopic Dermatitis usually causes itching, dry skin, rashes, and in severe cases fluid filled blisters. However, it is not transmitted from person to person.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Atopic Dermatitis is usually accompanied by severe itching and red rashes. Sometimes fluid filled blisters are formed and cause pain. Continuous scratching may aggravate the condition by spreading the infection to other parts of the body. The areas usually infected by Atopic Dermatitis are neck, face, limbs and groin. The symptoms may sometimes last long enough to be called chronic. They might also recur from time to time. Severe cases include serious itching over large areas.

Diagnosis of Atopic Dermatitis is usually done by physical examination by any skin specialist. Past record of allergies and a history of Atopic Dermatitis in the family are important considerations for a proper diagnosis. A thorough checking of the exact nature and location of the rashes should confirm a case of Atopic Dermatitis.

Allergy testing for Atopic Dermatitis often becomes necessary for proper diagnosis. This is especially important for patients with respiratory problems caused by asthma. In case a particular allergen has been identified to cause the attacks, steps should be worked out to avoid exposure to the same.

Treatment

Atopic Dermatitis is generally considered a chronic condition. Treatment includes medication as well as preventive measures. The condition can be controlled to a considerable extent by avoiding known allergens. Medication will depend on the type and severity of the itching bouts. Corticosteroids and moisturizers are usually used to treat bursts of Atopic Dermatitis.

Prevention

Dry skin should always be avoided. The patient, commonly a child, should be bathed and his/ her skin kept moist using a good moisturizer. Any cosmetics that may cause dryness of skin or irritation should be avoided.

Allergens often trigger bouts of itching which may turn serious at times. So keeping your child away from known allergens is very important. Commonly known allergens like animal dander, fur, dust mites, dust, eggs, wheat, milk and peanuts should be checked to see if the child is allergic to these.

Since itching is the most common symptom, keeping a check on the fingernails of children is also very important. Keep an eye on your kid and resort to basic medication the moment you see him/her itching.
