Dental Retainers |
|
|
Dental retainers are orthodontic apparatus which are fitted into the upper or lower part of the mouth during the post-brace period. Dental retainer is also suitable for people with minor orthodontic problems.
Dental retainers are usually fitted after the removal of corrective alignments. Dental retainers help in reinforcing the new position of the teeth while the bones and gums are adjusting to the new alignment of the mouth. Dental retainers are also useful in preventing the shifting of teeth, which is likely as the mouth continues to grow and they are also essential until the muscles in the mouth and jaw and the gums adapt to the new position of the teeth.
Dental retainers, if properly worn, can also correct minor orthodontic issues like, over or under-bite. A patient is required to wear it at all times, initially. Later on, they can revert to wearing a dental retainer only at night.
How to use Dental retainers?
Dental retainer kit usually contains two pieces of putty. You need to mix the two pieces of putty together for 15-45 seconds in order to get putty of one solid color. Next, you need to roll it and shape it like a finger. After this, you have to place the finger shaped putty into the tray so as to cover all parts of the tray. Next, you need to take the tray and place it over the center of the upper or lower teeth. Now, push the tray over your teeth. You need to hold it for a minute, and then remove it. The putty will solidify by then.
Care of Dental Retainers:
Dental retainers have to be scrubbed clean regularly and they have to be placed in the case. To keep your dental retainers clean and fresh, use lukewarm water and brush with Listerine.
