Trigger point therapy

Feeling unexplained pain at various parts of our bodies is one of the most common physical experiences we all have faced. Quite often, the cause of the pain remains undiscovered and the pain relapses at regular intervals. Trigger point therapy tries to explain and cure such pain by applying pressure no the various “trigger points” which are believed to cause and transmit pain to distant areas of the body. Trigger point therapy causes a reduction in the swelling and stiffness of the sarcomeres, and the range of motion, and flexibility of movement is rapidly increased.

Trigger points

Trigger point therapists define trigger points as areas of tenderness in a muscle. They are also called ‘muscle knots’ sometimes. Trigger points are of two types – active and latent. The difference between these two is that the active trigger points cause pain in the muscles and are responsible for referring pain to other parts of the body on application of pressure. The latent trigger points do not refer pain to other parts of the body. Instead, they cause pain when compressed. Stiff joints and other muscle related problems in old age are believed to be the result of the latent trigger points.

Trigger points are caused due to several causes like injuries, poor postures, birth related problems, and overexertion.

Trigger points v/s acupressure points

Trigger points differ from acupressure points. The latter are blockages in the path of energy flow in the body. Trigger points can be felt and they are tiny knots that develop in a muscle due to overuse or injury.

Types of pains caused by trigger points

Trigger point therapists opine that trigger points are responsible for most of the pains we suffer. These include headaches, jaw pain, back pains, tennis elbow, and neck pain. Pain in the joints like shoulders, hips, wrists and knees is also believed to be caused by triggers points. Even dizziness, sinusitis, false heart pain, genital pains, nausea, earaches, and numbness of limbs can be caused by trigger points.

Trigger point therapy – self treatment

The good news is that trigger point induced pains are predictable and follow known patterns. The points can be easily detected and simple techniques can deactivate them.

The simplest of the techniques is massage. Massaging the trigger point releases the blocked sarcomeres that are at the rot of the trigger point problem. Usually with trigger point massage, the pain is relieved within three to ten days. Massaging is the most effective form of self induced Trigger point therapy. It is easy and simple tools like a rod, cane or a pipe can be used effectively.
