Swedish massage is a therapy that enhances blood circulation and provides relaxation. It includes the use of long gliding strokes primarily in the direction of the blood flowing to the heart. This massage rejuvenates the body.

History of Swedish Massage


The founder of Swedish massage is Pehr Henrik Ling. He incorporated the massage techniques that were used by the Romans and the Greeks into the Swedish massage, which was formerly known as Medical Gymnastics. However, the credit for popularizing this massage goes to Johann Mezger ( Dutch physician).

How Swedish Massage Works


It involves the applying of pressure with hands and palms on the muscles of the body. This is done in order to increase the oxygen level in blood and release the body toxins. It comprises various techniques.

  • Effuerage – Gliding strokes with palms, fingertips and thumbs.
  • Petrissage- It involves kneading movements with the help of thumbs/fingers and hands.
  • Friction – Rubbing with palms and hands
  • Tapotement – Repeated heavy blows.
  • Vibration – Oscillatory movements
  • Percussion –Tapping or hacking
