Shiatus, is a traditional Japanese massage therapy. ‘Shiatsu’, the name has been derived from two words that is ‘shi’ meaning finger ’and ‘atsu’ meaning pressure. It needs to be stated here that this massage therapy is based on physiological and anatomical therapy. This therapy helps in the healing of body disorders and relieves one of mental stress.

Brief History of Shiatsu:

It is interesting to note that the term ‘Shiatsu’ for the first time appeared in the book ‘Shiastu Ryoho” by Tenpaku Tamai in the year 1915. Tokujiro Namokishi is known to be the founder of this massage therapy. The Japan Shiatsu College got established under his guidance in the year 1940.

The story goes that using his own innovative idea, Tokujiro Namokishi came up with a new technique to cure his mother, who was suffering from rheumatois arthritis. This technique, which involved the use of palms and thumbs, came to be known as ‘Shiatsu’ in the later years.

How Shiatsu Works:

The unique aspect of this therapy is that the experts use only their thumbs or fingers to apply pressure on specific parts of body that needs treatment. This massage therapy comprises massage techniques such as rubbing, squeezing and tapping to restore the energy flow in the body.
