Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a type of soft tissue therapy which includes assessment and manual massage techniques of the fascia. It releases the binding between the fascia, muscles, integument and bones. The main objective of Myofascial Release is to eliminate pain and to increase the motion and balance of the body.

The manipulation of the fascia whether directly or indirectly helps the reorganization of the connective tissue fibers in a flexible and functional method. The Fascia is a web of connective tissue which connects and covers the skeletal structures, organs and muscles in the body. It is situated between the underlying structure of the muscle, bone and skin. The myofascia system is composed of the fascia and muscle.

The fascia could be restricted by poor posture, inflammation, injuries, stress and trauma. Myofascial release restores tissue health by releasing fascia restrictions.

Brief History of Myofascial Release

The term ‘myofascial’ was used in the 1940’s by Janet G. Travell M.D. who referred it to the trigger points and musculoskeletal pain syndromes. In 1976, Dr. Travell used the term ‘Myofascial Trigger Point’ and published the reference ‘Myofascial Pain & Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual’ in 1983.

Types of Myofascial Release

This massage technique is divided into two schools- the direct and indirect method

Direct Myofascial release

The restricted fascia is worked on in the direct Myofascial Release method. The method involves the use of low force by the elbows, knuckles or tools by the practitioner. It is done by applying a few kilograms of force to slowly stretch the restricted fascia. It is also referred to deep tissue work and the practitioner massages through the fascia layers till the deep tissues.

Indirect myofascial release

This method includes a gentle stretch which relaxes the fascia. There is low force used usually of a few grams of pressure. This gentle massage helps in increased blood flow and heat in the massaged area. This way it eliminates pain and restores the performance of the body.
