Myofascial Release
Myofascial Release is a type of soft tissue therapy which includes assessment and manual massage techniques of the fascia. It releases the binding between the fascia, muscles, integument and bones. The main objective of Myofascial Release is to eliminate pain and to increase the motion and balance of the body.
The manipulation of the fascia whether directly or indirectly helps the reorganization of the connective tissue fibers in a flexible and functional method. The Fascia is a web of connective tissue which connects and covers the skeletal structures, organs and muscles in the body. It is situated between the underlying structure of the muscle, bone and skin. The myofascia system is composed of the fascia and muscle.
The fascia could be restricted by poor posture, inflammation, injuries, stress and trauma. Myofascial release restores tissue health by releasing fascia restrictions.
The term ‘myofascial’ was used in the 1940’s by Janet G. Travell M.D. who referred it to the trigger points and musculoskeletal pain syndromes. In 1976, Dr. Travell used the term ‘Myofascial Trigger Point’ and published the reference ‘Myofascial Pain & Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual’ in 1983.
