Top Tips to Choose Your Foundation

Whatever be your complexion – fair or medium or dusky – a foundation goes a long way to give you that fresh flawless look. Many of us chicken out the thought of wearing one, because most often we are unable to get the shade right. In a quest to look ‘fair’ many of you end up buying a shade that so light that your makeup looks like a mask. Avoid that with this right foundation buying basics:

  1. Work with your colour: Whether you like it or not, you have to use a foundation that is closest to your natural skin tone. You can never use a foundation to look fairer. Foundation only evens out patchy skin tone, and sets the base for makeup.
  2. Skin type matters: Consider your skin type before choosing a product. Oily skin types should use oil-free liquid or mousse formula, for the drier skin types a creamy formula with moisturising capability works best.
  3. The right look: Decide what type of look you’d like to achieve – a matte, luminous, clear. Foundations can offer sheer to heavy coverage and finishes that range from satiny to matte.
  4. Test is a must: Pick three corresponding shades – light, medium and dark. Apply each as a swatch on your jaw line, which has the right facial colouring. Any foundation will look slightly darker in the bottle, so keep this in mind when assessing your options.
  5. Check in natural light: Blend each gently with a makeup sponge. The right one will disappear into your skin. Bring a hand mirror along so you can view your options in natural light.
  6. Blend if needed: Most Indian girls tend to have two-tone skin. So you might need to mix two colours together. During summer when one tans, you can use the slightly darker shade, while in winters you can mix two to get your shade right.
  7. Get matching concealer: Choose a foundation and concealer from the same product line to get a perfect match.
