The fruitarian diet is strictly a vegetarian diet where one has the leverage to eat only fresh fruits.

Origin of Fruitarian diet

The origin of the fruitarian diet dates back to around hundreds of years, probably more than that. Leonardo da Vinci, the artist was also a fruitarian.

Description of Fruitarian diet

There are seven basic fruit groups

  1. Acid fruits: Citrus, pineapples, strawberries, pomegranates, kiwi, cranberries and sour apples
  2. Subacid fruits: Sweet apples, sweet cherries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, peaches, pears, cheri-moyas, papayas, figs, apricots, and mangos
  3. Sweet fruits: Bananas, grapes, melons, and persimmons
  4. Nuts: Pecans, almonds, Brazil, cashews, walnuts, macadamias, pistachios, pine nuts, hazelnuts, beechnuts, and hickory
  5. Seeds: Sunflower, sesame, squash, and pumpkin
  6. Dried fruits: Dates, figs, apricots, apples, raisins, cherries, prunes, bananas, and cranberries
  7. Oily fruits: Avocados, coconuts, and olives.

Majority of the people who eat fruits (those who are fruitarians) have the belief that fruits available in majority of the commercial supermarkets is of poor quality. Hybridization, chemical fertilization, chemical pesticides and harvesting are the various reasons for the poor quality of the fruit as the fruit does not get ripe in totality. Fruitarian David Wolfe has stated that one should eat one fruit at a time and before taking the next fruit, you should wait for 45 minutes, whereas the Fruitarian Foundation gives strong recommendation that one should wait a minimum of 90 minutes between the eating span of two fruits.
