Elimination Diet



Elimination diets have been defined as diets where people absolutely stop eating some specific food items for a specified time period. After giving it a stoppage, they again bring those food items back in their diet and in a way throw a challenge to the body as to reading the responsiveness of the body. Elimination diets have been on demand for detecting food allergies and sometimes food intolerances. They are specifically used for medical purposes and are not nutritionally balanced.

Description of Elimination diet


The usual indications that you have a tendency towards food sensitivity are

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloating
  • Excessive gas


  • Hives
  • Rashes
  • Eczema
  • Headaches
  • Migraine
  • Asthma
  • Wheezing
  • Hay fever-like symptoms
For some it might develop immediately after eating the food, while for some it might occur hours later. The food items that cause spontaneous reactions are peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish. If there is no immediate symptom, become delayed then it is sometimes difficult to detect and are known as “maskedrdquo”.

The food items that cause delayed sensitivities in the body are

  • Dairy products
  • Egg
  • Wheat
  • Soy
You should always consult a physician while undertaking an elimination diet as it is really very rigorous. A dietitian or a nutritionist should also be consulted at the same time. The diet should be followed religiously to get desired results.

Diet plan for Elimination diet (this continues for 2-3 weeks)


  1. Grains: rice and rice products, sago, tapioca, buckwheat products, millet products
  2. Proteins: veal, lamb, chicken, turkey, rabbit, tuna, bream, whiting, dried peas, lentils
  3. Fruit: peeled pears, peeled apples, pawpaw
  4. Vegetables: potatoes, sweet potatoes, lettuce, parsley, bamboo shoots, celery, cabbage
  5. Sweeteners and seasonings: sugar, maple syrup, sunflower oil, safflower oil, salt, garlic
  6. Beverages: water, fresh pear juice


Benefits of Elimination diet


There are people who have more serious levels of these symptoms being detected in the body. For them, it is easier to eliminate the food items from their diet by easily recognizing them. For those with whom the symptoms are less severe, for them it is a bit taxing to follow the plan religiously and make it worthwhile.
