Diverticular Disease Diet



Diverticulitis is a disease in which the inner lining layer of the colon bulges or intestine becomes inflamed. It takes place when the pockets in the wall of the large intestine get infected. Eating diverticular disease diet, you can get rid of such unhealthy situation. The condition is called diverticulosis and the infection is known as diverticulitis. Usually low-residue diet is suggested by the dieticians. It reduces bowel volume and cures the infection. However, doctors also recommend high fiber diet for dealing with the symptoms of the disease. Fiber makes the stools soft and reduces pressure inside the colon. In this way, bowel contents get a better movement.

Your chance of getting into the trap of this disease increases when you reach your 50s. Usually 20% to 50% people in the age group of 50s get diverticular disease. During 90s, almost every one gets attacked by this health condition.

Foods you should eat to cope with diverticulitis

  • Breads and grains (6-11 servings daily)
  • Bread, pastas, pizzas, pancakes, muffins, bagels, pita bread (use whole-grain, whole-wheat flours, and
  • add 2-3 tsp of unprocessed wheat bran to, or substitute oat bran for one third of all-purpose flour in homemade
  • breads, muffins and other baked goods)
  • Whole-wheat, whole-grain and bran cereal products
  • Buckwheat and stone-ground cornmeal
  • Rye bread
  • Whole wheat crackers or crisp breads
  • Oatmeal, oat bran, or grits
  • Barley, dry
  • Wheat germ
  • Whole wheat pasta
  • Brown rice
Vegetables (3-5 servings daily)
  • You can choose all kind of vegetables for example, asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, green veggies, sweet potatoes and so on.
Fruits
  • Eat all fruits such as apple, apricot, banana, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, dates, fig, grapefruit, nectarine, orange, peach, pear, pineapple, etc.
Milk/dairy (2-3 servings daily)
  • You can increase the amount of fiber in yogurt or cottage cheese by including fresh fruit, whole grain or bran cereals.
Meat/meat substitutes (2-3 servings or all total 180 gm daily)
  • Different kinds of beans and peas for example aduki, baked beans, black beans, fava, garbanzo beans, kidney beans, lentils, lima beans, pinto beans and split peas.
  • Choose smooth peanut butter and more other smooth nut butters.
