The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act has defined dietary supplements in the United States as products which are not considered to be exclusively food items but acts as one which serves as an addition to the regular diet regimen of an individual. This law also specifies that dietary supplements should be consumed by mouth and should have one or more dietary components.

It is advisable that before taking dietary supplements go and consult your health care provider. Do not pot for new dietary supplements before weighing the credibility. More importantly, pregnant women and those who are breastfeeding should definitely discuss the pros and cons of taking dietary supplements with their health care provider.

Some dietary supplements get secreted into the breast milk, thus affecting the foetus. While children are taking dietary supplements, they should also be cautious. The dosage that adults take might be harmful for children. So, it is best to consult a dietician and take the prescribed medicated dosage.
