Also a regular soak with vegetable oil is every effective. It replenishes the moisture lost, in fact vegetable oils are much better than many commercially sold nail care products because, it doesn't have the alcohol containing fragrances that can dry out nails.

If you are bugged by brittle nails, trim them shorter. Longer nails tend to chip and break easily.

Also you could use an over the counter moisturizer, and use it just after you wash your hands, and repeat this every time. If you are planning to buy over a drug store counter, ask for a one which contains lactic acid or urea, these are two ingredients that attract and bind moisture to your nails.

If someone ever told you that tapping your nails against a hard surface toughens them, you could ask them to buy you a years supply of nail tougheners. Well, tapping your nails against hard surfaces, will only help in traumatizing them and they would grow faster, and though they seem new and fresh, they are not.
