Lakme Fashion Week

Lakme Fashion Week is organized by the Fashion Design Council of India that was established in the year 1998. The main objective behind the foundation of such a body was to foster the growth of the fashion industry of India. Its focus was to nurture the prospective operators and enable them to face the huge Indian market. In the beginning, the council aimed to boost the growth of the domestic pret-a-porter which refers to readymade garments and diffusion, which is the fusion of ready-to-wear and trousseau/couture.

The Lakme India Fashion Week was formed to create a platform for the budding fashion designers in India to showcase their collections before the corporates and other players in the industry. LIFW, as it is popularly called, has showcased the creativity of the Indian fashion designers and has also introduced them to the rest of the world for business and commercial purposes. Within the next few years, the reputation of Lakme Fashion Week spread to other parts of the globe like UK, France, Hong Kong, Singapore, and UAE.

In recent years, the Indian fashion design council has laid emphasis on the corporatization of the Indian designers, which will enable them to reach out to wider base of consumers through their supply chains, and hence cater to the ever expanding pret market in the country. It also conducts seminars, workshops, and development programs to hone the creative and entrepreneurial skills in the designers.
