Sabyasachi Mukherjee

Hailing from the City of Joy, Calcutta or Kolkata (as it is known now), the Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee graduated from India's foremost institute of fashion design, N.I.F.T. (National Institute of Fashion Technology). His graduation from N.I.F.T., in 1999, marks his entry into the world of fashion. By 2003, he had made his international debut. This young designer, Sabyasachi Mukherjee has, already, showcased his designs in the Fashion Weeks at Milan, London and New York.

Today he is regarded as one of the most successful fashion designers. His collections are characterized by a very "vintage" feel, and at the same time they are very contemporary. He makes sure that the fabrics he uses for his collections undergo a lot of treatment to give them a "streetside" look and feel. Often the fabrics are burned and bleached to give them the right shade and texture!

Sabyasachi Mukherjee was highly inspired by the Nizamiyat of Hyderabad and designed a wedding collection keeping it in mind. He is highly regarded among fashion aspirants for his diverse approach to the industry. His fabrics include cotton voils, georgettes, chiffons and organza. His style mantra is "fusion." At the same time, this young designer is fascinated by the versatility of the saree.

Gypsies, prostitutes, nomads, and traditional fabrics and designs have been an inspiration for Sabyasachi Mukherjee. He has seamlessly experimented with a traditional Bengali embroidery form called "kantha-stich." Sabyasachi has also worked with one of the most prestigious Indian film directors, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He designed the costumes for Bhansali's classic "Black." Sabyasachi retails his label, all over India, through major fashion outlets like Oogan, Oorja, Melange, Carma, and Espee.
