America has seen a host of fashion designers who have over the years gained immense repute among their industry. One of such renowned name in the American fashion fraternity is Derek Lam. Derek was born in San Francisco, California. He is the youngest of three children in his family. His family had a business which imported clothes from Asia and also that his grandparents was looking after a garment factory in San Francisco. The factory had its specialization in bridal and wedding dresses. It was from his childhood that he started growing a passion for fashion admiring those wedding gowns.

Lam’s graduation was from Parsons School of Design in the year 1990. he started off his career working as an assistant for Michael Kors and continued doing it for three to four years. After this, he went ahead to Hong Kong and started working for a large retail brand. Gathered the Hong Kong experience, Derek returned back to New York and he became the Vice President of Design with the Kors line.

With all this experience with him, he gathered the pace to launch his own label in 2003. He made his debut at the New York Fashion Week in September 2003, to show case the Spring/Summer 2004 collections. Right after that, he won the CFDA Perry Ellis Swarovski Award meant for new designers in 2005. He also started designing shoes and jewelry along with the clothing lines. All of Lam’s creations were pretty and had a girly touch which was coupled with clean, crisp silhouettes. All his signature creations included raw silk sheath dresses having plunging necklines. There were wide-leg trousers and also dainty cashmere pea coats along with stiff silk belts. Presently Lam works with Tod’s for creating ready-to-wear. There is no need to think retro. Lam designed skinny black leather pants, oversized tuxedo jacket, and jersey dresses as well. All his creations made one look sexy and stunning. Evening dresses were also his key skill.
