Robert Gordon Mackiewas born on March 24, 1940 in Monterey Park, California. He is an American fashion designer whose creations have always been flamboyant. Bob Mackie has been well known in his fashion fraternity for designing costumes for a lot of Hollywood celebrities. They include -

  • Diana Ross
  • Tina Turner
  • Mitzi Gaynor

Robert happened to be the costume designer for ‘The Carol Burnett Show’ for a long tenure of 11 years. He has also been gaining fame for his unique dress designs for high-priced Barbie dolls.

The best creations of Bob Mackiehave been remembered best for their humorous element. They are -

  • In The Carol Burnett Show, he designed a ‘curtain dress’ (complete with a curtain rod across the shoulders) that Carol Burnett wore in the Went with the Wind parody.
  • The outfit that Cher wore at the March 1986 Academy Awards included a black stretch pants, a bejeweled loincloth, knee high boots, a black chainlink top, and a huge feathered Mohawk headdress (one and a half times taller than her head).

Bob Mackie has been called the ‘Sultan of sequins’, or the ‘rajah of rhinestones’ – as all his designs were well-known for his sparkling and creative. Nine Emmy Awards was in his baggage and he had also been nominated thrice for the Academy Award.
