She is an American fashion designer who was born on August 4, 1964. All over the globe – the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, her brand has gathered immense praise. Early life of Anna Sui
She was born in Detroit, Michigan and took the curve towards fashion from a very early age. After going to New York, she undertook a course in the Parsons School of Design.
Fashion career for Anna Sui
After graduating out of Parsons, Anna worked for a lot of junior sportswear companies. It was at this time that she started designing her own clothing collection out of her apartment. This retailed at locations like the Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s. Friends like Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, to encourage; she launched her first runway show in 1991. Everybody welcomed her work and thus she opened a retail location at 113 Greene Street in New York City’s Soho District. The shop had lavender walls, red floors, antique black furniture, and signature dolly head mannequins. These elements were a part of the SOHO fashion and soon it became synonymous with the Anna Sui brand. Defined a Time article, “The stores have come to emphasize the epitome of culture in a continually shifting fashion world.”
Over the years, her work was embraced by the American, European, Asian and Middle Eastern markets gladly. She came up with iconic fashion shows – with an apt rock music background and the background designs also played a vital role.
Achievements of Anna Sui
New York Times named her as a fashion designer who “never panders”. She has also found place in the Time Magazine’s list of this decade’s top five fashion icons. It is 2009 that Sui won the CFDA Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award (Council of Fashion Designers of America). It recognizes and gives honor to contributions made to the American fashion fraternity by their outstanding contribution. She also joined the same rank as that of Yves St Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Diane von Furstenberg and Bill Blass – who had previously received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
It was in 2008 that she was profiled in Newsweek’s Women and Leadership. She was highly recognized for her contribution to fashion at the Bravo A-list Awards. Awards and recognitions just didn’t seem to stop.
Anna Sui’s clients include famous faces from the fashion industry, Hollywood -Paris Hilton, Patricia Arquette, Mischa Barton, Christina Ricci, Cher, Naomi Campbell, Sofia Coppola, Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, Maria Sharapova, Nicole Richie, Liv Tyler, Courtney Love, and James Iha. She had also created the costumes for the anime series, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo.
