India may not be the fashion capital of the world but definitely is the country where designers have a lot of colorful option to experiment with. These designers create or design beautiful clothes to be purchased by the people. Clothes though is just one aspect of designing. Shoes, accessories, upholstery are also where designers try their hand.

To create the beautiful designs that we see being worn by the models on the ramp, the designers study sketch designs, fashion trends; they need to select colors, the fabric of their design and then need to superintend the final production.

After the fabric, color and design is decided upon, the designers use a cheaper material to create one dress and try it on a model just to know what the final product would like .

At this stage they can decide upon the adjustments to be made in the design and dress. Once the final adjustments are made; the designs are then worked upon on the original material and marketed to clothing retailers or put up in the stores of the designers themselves.

Fashion designers are classified keeping in mind their domain of expertise.

• Clothing Designers – Those who design an ample variety of formal wear, casual wear, sportswear, maternity wear, outer wear, inner wear and various other specialized selections.
• Accessory designers – Those who design a wide range of accessories including hand bags, scarves, hats, hosieries, fashion jewelries and scores of other fashionable elements.
• Footwear designers – Those who make different forms of shoes, boots sandals and innumerable other designer collection.

Famous Fashion Designers

India is the home for some of the famous designers of the world and India has also opened its market for the foreign designers to venture in. Some of the famous fashion designers are:

Aki Narula: Aki Narula is a known name in the fashion world had his first show held in Mumbai at the Opera House. His simple designs where he emphasizes more on texture spread a cheerful mood all around and have an important place on the fashion banner. They go around under the name 'Aki' and 'Aki Narula'.

J.J. Valaya: One of the leading fashion houses of the country, Valaya, designs, manufacturers and retails fashion garments. But clothes is not all that J.J Valaya deals in. he has a home furnishing store,'Life', which has everything that you might require for your home.

Ritu Beri: Ritu Beri headed the French fashion brand, Scherrer and was the first Asian designer to do so. She has brought lots of laurels to the country and her designs are held in high regard not just in India but also abroad.

Manish Malhotra: With a show to his name, The Manish Malhotra Show, which the man himself hosts, Manish Malhotra has designed clothes for the biggies of Bollywood. Rich in color and texture his outfits are not just exclusively beautiful but also competitively priced. It is one collection which will surely attract you to the outlets.

Rohit Bal: A blend of imagination, fantasy and ancient traditions-the Rohit Bal creations always stand out in the crowd of designers. His contributions to the fashion industry cannot be marked and summed that easily. It's is only the 'Whose who' of the people who adorn the Rohit Bal creation.

Marc Jacobs : The famous fashion designer who has gained repute for his association with the French fashion house Louis Vuitton. Masses respect with line of collection – be it clothes, watches or perfumes.

Vera Wang : This great American fashion designer has always been known for the amazing bridal collections. The pop society associates her name quite often. Hollywood has also embraced her collections as wedding dresses of few well-known celebrities like Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez and Sharon Stone has been created by her.

Calvin Klein : The brand name has always been innovative. On the onset, it was launched as a line of coats for men and women and then on became famous as a jeans brand. But now, it is more known for its underwear segment.

Kate Spade : One of the trendiest young American designer, she is known for her line of handbags. Range of accessories, raincoats, personal organizers and makeup – she does it all.

Ralph Lauren : He is best known for his Polo collection and runs more than thirty five boutique stores all across United States.

Anna Sui : This reputed fashion designer is quite well liked in the United States and Japan as well. Besides designing clothes, she also indulges in shoe design and making a fragrance collection.

Donna Karan : She is the famous "DK" in the American fashion brand "DKNY". Her work is widely accepted in mostly all parts of the globe.

Todd Oldham : Leaving aside his experience in fashion design, he also boasts of an experience in design for homes.

Tommy Hilfiger: This is one brand which has marked a name for itself on the fashion globe. Revenue close to 2 million, Tommy Hilfiger designs boasts of men, women and children wear. Perfumes and accessories are also quite popular under this brand.
