Prada was founded by Leanne le Prada in the year 1890. It was originally known as Fratelli Prada. The leather goods shop in Milan, sold imported English steamer trunks and handbags, in addition to ordinary leather products. Gradually, Fratelli Prada’s shop became one of the top shopping destinations for leather goods and accessories. Later he was joined by his daughter-in-law who took Prada to a new height. Miuccia Prada, the daughter of Mario, joined the company in the year 1970 and started making waterproof backpacks out of Pocone. The combined efforts of Miuccia Prada and her partner, Patrizio Bertelli led to the launch of first set of backpacks and totes in the year 1979. Miuccia Prada made these out of a tough military spec black nylon used by her grandfather as coverings for his steamer trunks. In the following year, Prada released a new set of nylon totes with which it shot to fame. Business expansions took place in all major shopping destinations across Europe. Next, Prada launched its shoe line which was an instant success. In the year 1985, Miuccia launched the classic Prada handbags that become an overnight sensation all over the world. The year 1989 saw the launch of Prada women’s ready-to-wear collection, targeted at the affluent working women. In the year 1992, the clothing brand Miu Miu (named after Miuccia Prada’s nickname) was launched, catering to the taste of the hip, younger consumer base.
