Nike

The company, NIKE was founded by track athlete Phil Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman, in the year 1952. Phil Knight was from the University of Oregon. Initially known as "Blue Ribbon Sports," it served as a distributor for a Japanese shoe company.

In the year 1966, the company opened up its first retail store in California. Meeting with subsequent success, the company expanded at a dramatic rate and soon released its first lineup of shoes under the name "Nike."

Nike in Greek mythology stands for the Greek goddess of victory—a worthy name for a premium sportswear and sports equipment brand. The company went public in the month of December, 1980. This was after it met with unprecedented success in the United States.
