In 1950 Lilly Pulitzer married Peter Pulitzer and they settled at Palm Beach, Florida to lead a Bohemian lifestyle. Lilly’s husband Peter owned several citrus groves of Florida and from those end products Lilly decided to open a juice stand on Via Mizner. While working Lilly noticed that the squeezing of juice messed up her clothes. In order to camouflage the stains of juice Lilly instructed her tailor to design a sleeveless shift dress sewed with bright and colorful printed cotton.

After the dress was completed Lilly loved it madly and so also her customers are. Then she instructed her tailor to make few more dress like the previous one. Along with the juice she also sold the dresses. After a certain period of time she discovered that she was selling more dress than juice. The dress gradually came to known as Lilly’s. The first celebrity who was spotted flaunting the shift dress by Lily Pulitzer was none other than Jackie Kennedy and she was featured in Life Magazine wearing the one. Thus suddenly, the Shift Dress by Lilly turned out to be huge fashion sensation.
