Joop

Wolfgang Joop was born on November 18, 1944 in Potsdam. He is a German fashion designer. Wolfgang Joop founded the fashion and cosmetics company JOOP!.

Joop did his schooling from the Wilhelm-Gymnasium high school in Braunschweig. Thereafter he pursued advertising psychology in Braunschweig as his father insisted him. With his interest at the lowest level, he didn’t complete this study but went on to work as a restaurateur. Thereafter, he got involved in art.

Career of Joop

Joop’s career started in 1970 – with him and his wife participating in the fashion competition convened by the German magazine Constance. They also bagged three top prizes. With this fame and success, Joop became a fashion editor at Neue Mode (a women's magazine). Thereafter he started working independently after leaving his job in 1971.

The fashion brand – JOOP!

During the early days of 1982, Joop displayed his first prêt-à-porter women's collection. The men's collection followed in 1985. in 1987, he displayed his first perfume collection. He had created a niche for himself in the market with his name being mentioned in capital letters symbolizing energy followed by an exclamation mark.

Joop received the Fil d'or (a major design award) in 1983. Then another acclamation followed as in 1984 he got the Golden spinning wheel from the European Silk Commission.

From 1997, Joop's products have been sold through Joop GmbH. The JOOP! Shares were sold off in parts – in 1998, 95% was sold off to an investor and the remaining 5% was sold off in 2001.
