Beauty Pageants




Beauty pageants rank among the most popular fashion events that had evolved in the last century. These are beauty contests that not only judge the physical beauty of the participants but also their personality, talents, and responses to the questions posed to them by the jury.

Beauty contests


The term “beauty” pageants generally referred to the contests held for women. Two of the most popular among them are the Miss Universe and Miss World contests that are held every year. Each contestant in these events is representative of a particular country. In other words, the participating countries send a particular contestant as their representative for a particular year, who is selected through internal screening.

The women, usually aging between 18-23 years undergo rigorous sessions which are a part of the evaluation procedure. The results are announced on the final evening after they have participated in another series of rounds.

Similar competitions are also held for men, which are not referred to as “beauty contests”. These contests primarily judge the physique of the participants. Mr. World and Manhunt International were the most popular among these. In fact each contest gave rise to a fresh set of body builders. However, since 1990, the parameters for these competitions changed. Winning from then, did not solely depend on the physical attributes. Beauty contests are also held for children. However, they evoked a lot of criticism due to ill effects on children due to media exposure at a premature stage of their lives.

Multi-tiered beauty contests


Multi-tiered beauty contests are organized by trade associations where highly intelligent and attractive queens are selected as representatives of the ceremonies and official receptions. She would be presenting awards, deliver consumer information to common man, and representing industry in parades and festivals. They would also be entitled to receiving scholarships for delivering competent service to the industry on a particular year. For instance, the South Carolina Watermelon Queen had to tour the supermarkets with different varieties of tasting. North Dakota Honey Queen may approve recipes of honey.

The commercial perspective


The beauty contests are also organized from commercial perspective. The winners of these contests are signed by the biggest cosmetics companies as their brand ambassadors. This strategy for promotion of the new products has proved to be highly effective over the years.
