History of Miss Earth
Miss Earth beauty pageant was started in the year 2001 by Carousel productions. The purpose was to address environmental issues globally. The participants are directly involved in different environmental causes. The winner of the contest addresses various issues relating to the environment and spreads the message of “green revolution.” The slogan “Beauties for a Cause,” adopted in 2003, aptly summarizes the main objectives of the Miss Earth Foundation, the managing body of the contest. The winner of Miss Earth contest is also the spokesperson for United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Knowledge about the environment is an essential criteria that a participant must possess. Before the finals, the participants are judged on various activities and events. A panel interview is also held where the contestants have to speak about environmental issues and their personal takes on them. Sixteen semi finalists are selected following the preliminary rounds, these semifinalists then compete in the final event. Four finalists are selected after screening the swim suit, evening gown and interview rounds. The winner is chosen based on the answer to one question related to the environment.
