Toners

Toning along with cleansing and moisturizing should form a part of any skin care regimen. The importance of toners as a skin care products cannot be over emphasized. Toners help to keep your skin firm and supple. This page will let you know about the goodness of the usage of toners and how to use toners.

The steps to a healthy skin are as follows:

  • Clean your skin with a mild cleanser.
  • Tone it with a toner.
  • Moisturize it with a moisturizer.

Some commercially available types of toners are as follows:

  • Astringents: This type of toner has the strongest concentration of alcohol in it. Usually it ranges from 20-60%. Astringents are recommended for skins which are very oily in nature. It is known that excessive loss of oil from skin through the use of toners forces the skin to produce more oil to compensate. This excess oil can result in the widening of the pores in the skin. To avoid this, astringents should be applied only on the oily areas.

The main ingredients of a natural or homemade toner are honey, ivy, nettle, geranium and sage. Rose water is considered an excellent mild toner and can be freely used on sensitive skins. Another popular type of toner can be made with herbal tea. The mix can be made by adding marigold, chamomile, rosehip and herbal tea to boiling water. Allow the herbal mixture to cool. Drops of lavender or orange oil may be mixed and applied after the liquid has cooled down. Rosewater is one of the best natural toners.
