Some of the common natural ingredients used in toners are green tea, calendula, witch hazel, rosewater, avocado oil, sage oil etc are used. Sometimes, toners also comes with alcohol base. But this should be used cautiously as it tends to dry the skin excessively.
Why should you use toner?
This is a common question that many women wonder. Skin toner helps in improving the skin tissue and tighten them. Toner must be applied after cleansing the skin. This is because after you clean skin the surface oil and pH balance of the skin becomes low. Thus, the function of toner begins. The toner restores the pH balance of skin and helps in removing traces of leftover makeup. It also reduces the size of pores that gets enlarged during cleansing process. Toner can also be used in to sooth and calm irritated skin. Toners promote healing, prevent blackheads and firms the skin to minimize the appearance of fine wrinkles.
How to use toner for your skincare regimen?
Before you start using toner for your skincare regimen, select the right type of toner and give your skin a chance to enjoy the benefits. There are different kinds of toners are available on market dedicated to different skin types and skin tones. If you are going for alcohol based toner, choose wisely as it tends to make the skin dry. If you are suffering from acne, you will find different kinds of toners specially formulated for preventing acne.
Wash your face properly and pat dry before you apply toner. Drop two to three drops of toner in a moist cotton ball and dab all over the face evenly. While application make sure that toner reaches to hairline and corners of nose. You must remember that toner must not be rubbed over the skin as your skin might suffer from damages. Keep the toner over the skin for one or two minute and apply moisturizer.
Types of Toners
- Astringents:
This type of toner has the strongest concentration of alcohol in it. Usually it ranges from 20-60%. Astringents are recommended for skins which are very oily in nature. It is known that excessive loss of oil from skin through the use of toners forces the skin to produce more oil to compensate. This excess oil can result in the widening of the pores in the skin. To avoid this, astringents should be applied only on the oily areas.
- Skin Tonics:
Recommended for normal or combination skin, this has a lesser alcohol content than astringents.
- Skin Fresheners: Skin fresheners contain water and glycerine as their main ingredients. They contain very little of alcohol, if any. This is the mildest form of toners available. They are recommended for use on normal and sensitive skin.
Toners play a vital role in skin care as they rejuvenate the skin. Toners tighten the pores of the skin. With regular use of toners, one can get rid of skin blemishes that occur with dirt accumulation in the skin. It maintains the critical pH balance of the skin and gives it a natural luster. Toners help to remove dead skin cells and help the skin to glow.
Most beauty and skin care brands have their own range of toners that are suited for specific skin types. Brands like Neutrogena, SeaBreeze, Sephora, Clarins and Avalon offer their own range of skin toners.
