Male Breast Reduction

Male breast enlargement or gynecomastia is a cause of embarrassment and ridicule for men. Male breast reduction surgery helps to permanently remove this physical problem. Gynecomastia is more common in adolescent boys. Some of the causes that lead to gynecomastia are obesity, castration, Gilbert's syndrome, genetic disorders, tumors and steroid abuse.

Male breast reduction surgery is effective in removing glandular tissue and excessive fat from the breasts. This surgery is however, not performed on those who are chain smokers or are into drug abuse. Alcoholics are also barred from undergoing this surgery for health reasons.

What Happens in Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

An incision is made into the skin in the region surrounding the areola. Excessive fat, glandular tissue and skin are then removed from the sides and bottom of the breast region. In some cases, liposuction is also used to suck out the fat from the breasts.

A cannula is inserted through the incision to remove the fatty layers. Excessive fluids are also sucked out in some cases, through a small drain attached to the area. An elastic garment is to be worn over the operated area after the completion of the treatment.

You will be advised to desist from driving your car for a few days. You should also avoid beginning an exercise regimen right after the completion of your surgery.

Risks of Male Breast Reduction

Some of the risks associated with male breast reduction surgery are excessive blood and fluid loss, skin infections and bruising. In some cases, it might also result in scars in the breast area or asymmetry nipples.
