Hyaluronic Acid Therapy

Hyaluronic acid therapy is a technique used in cosmetic surgery for improving and accentuating the facial features. Restylane, Esthelis, Hylaform and Perlane are some of the common injectibles used in hyaluronic acid therapy. Hyaluronic acid is located between the skin and its connective tissues and helps to improve the elasticity of the skin.

It supports the facial tissues and gives a more youthful appearance to the skin. Hyaluronic acid therapy can help to reduce crow's feet, smokers lines, oral commissures, frown lines and cheek depressions.

Procedure for Hyaluronic Acid Therapy

The skin is first cleaned with an antiseptic solution. Local anesthetic is applied on the area to be treated. Hyaluronic acid is then injected into the skin with a fine needle. This is followed up with a light massage to let the solution take hold on the skin. The skin might appear to be red or swollen after the treatment. However, this usually disappears within a week.

Hyaluronic acid therapy needs to be repeated two to three times a year to retain the youthful appearance. Allergic reactions are negligible in hyaluronic acid therapy. In fact, it is recommended to people who are allergic to bovine collagen treatments. Hyaluronic acid therapy generally lasts from twenty minutes to an hour depending upon the area of the treatment.

Side Effects of Hyaluronic Acid Therapy

Minor discomfort may be encountered during the hyaluronic acid therapy treatment. Some of the common side effects are redness of skin and swelling of the face. However, these conditions usually disappear in a few days. In rare cases, red, thick nodules arise in the area of the treatment.
