Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is the permanent solution for removing unwanted hair. Excessive hair growth is a cause of embarrassment to many, especially for women. Laser hair removal is a completely safe procedure whereby laser energy is applied to the hair follicles for permanently removing the hair strands. Laser energy can be used to remove hair from any part of your body, be it the face, legs, hands, neck, underarms, shoulders or the bikini line.

Stages of Hair Growth

There are three distinctive cycles of hair growth; The Anagen of the active growth cycle, the Catagen or the dormant cycle and the Telogen or the shedding out cycle. Laser hair removal treatment works best at the growth or Anagen cycle.

Laser Hair Removal Process

The area to be treated is exposed to the laser energy in short intervals. The laser energy targets melanin in the hair follicle which is responsible for hair pigmentation. The melanin residing in the hair follicles absorbs the laser light and converts it into heat, which permanently damages the hair follicles and prevents hair regrowth. An important point to be noted is that laser hair removal therapy is able to remove only black or brown hair.

Laser hair removal therapy involves a number of sittings, whereby the area to be treated is persistently exposed to the laser lights for removal of hair. Generally, the treatment sessions are placed at a gap of three to twelve weeks. However, this depends on the coarseness of the hair, the skin color, the rate of hair growth and the metabolism.

Side Effects of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal does not have any major side effects. There might be a temporary change in skin pigmentation. But this does not occur in patients who have un-tanned or fair skin. Burns and blisters are common only in patients who have a colored or dark complexion.
