Aromatherapy Oils

Oils are an integral part of aromatherapy. Aromatherapy oils are burnt and also used to massage various body parts. The scent of essential oils when burnt generates a feel good factor that relaxes you. Fragrant oils of aromatherapy are often mixed with certain other base oils. The mixture is then used to massage various body parts.

Types of Aromatherapy Oils

  • The most common type of oil used in aromatherapy are essential oils. These oils are often used for massaging and therapeutic purposes. These are the volatile parts of aromatic plants. Lavender, jasmine, bargot, juniper, Basil Champaca, Mandarin are some examples of essential aromatherapy oils.

  • Carrier oils are another type of aromatherapy oils. Often referred to as base oils, these are used along with essential oils during massage.

  • Hydrosols are steam distillate products, obtained during the extraction of essential oils from aromatic substances. These can be mixed with bath water, you can also use it as skin cleaners and aftershaves.

Aromatherapy Oils Usage Tips

  • Make sure that you use the oils in optimum proportions. Improper usage may lead to skin irritation. The essential oils are concentrated liquids and must be diluted with carrier oils before usage.

  • Essential aromatic oils should be stored in dark colored bottles. To increase their shelf life, store in a cool dry place.

  • The normal period of usage of pure essential oils is two years. But if you have a mixture of essential oil and carrier oil then the shelf life to be considered is that of the carrier oils.

  • It is suggested that you consult a professional aroma therapist before buying any of the aromatic oils.
