History of Aromatherapy




The history of aromatherapy can be traced back to thousands of years. It is believed that aromatherapy was present even before the birth of Christ. Egyptians, Romans, Chinese, Greeks and Indians are said to be the patrons of aromatherapy since ancient times.The word aromatherapy is believed to have been first coined by Rene Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist, in early 20th century.

History of aromatherapy in Egypt


It is believed that the practice of using fragrant herbs for medicinal and cosmetic purposes was first started in the ancient land of Egypt. Aromatic substances were used in the mummification process of embalming dead bodies.

Incense and other aromatic oils, extracted from plants were often burned as part of the religious practices. It was believed that certain fragrances helped to calm one's senses. Egyptians also used aromatic oils to massage after bath. Even the food that was cooked was flavored with herbs that helped in digestion and fortified the natural defenses of the body.

The Chinese civilization, it is believed utilized the basic principles of aromatherapy for medicinal purposes. The oldest book of medicine by Shen Nung dates back to 2700 BC. The book contains information about nearly 300 herbs and plants.

Ayurveda, an ancient branch of medicine, practiced in India includes the practice of massaging with different aromatic oils.

History of aromatherapy in Greece and Rome


Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine used aromatic baths and massages in treating diseases. Some of the remedies suggested by Pedacius Discorides, a Greek physician are still used in aromatherapy practices. It is believed that the Romans learned about the principles of aromatherapy from the Greeks.
