Being an American fashion designer, Marc Jacobs have gained massive popularity and has created a niche for himself in the fashion world. He was brought up in New York and he pursued his studies at the Parsons School of Design, after which he went on to become the outstanding face in the fashion street. His name came to limelight after he had designed a ‘grunge’ collection for Perry Ellis, but in total dismay, the collection was not accepted with the mind set with which it was created and thus Marc had to leave Perry Ellis. Presently, Marc is associated with the French design house Louis Vuitton as their Creative Director. His jobs entails around spearheading collaborations like Stephen Sprouse's graffiti bags and Takashi Murakami's pastel-colored accessories. He also has his own collection of clothing, named March Jacobs and the less expensive collection is known as Marc. Both are quite popular in the fashion fraternity.

The method that Marc Jacobs followed while designing was to work and design at free will bypassing all trends. He always creates a difference and has continued doing so. In Spring 2004/2005, when most of the designers followed the ‘safari theme’, Marc’s collection was totally lady-like and he prepared the catwalk where models walked on an archway of 4,50,000 roses. The entire globe has witnessed Marc Jacobs’ sensational clothing collection.

Biography of Marc Jacobs


He was born on April 9, 1963, in New York City to a Jewish American family. After having attended the High School of Art and Design in New York City, he graduated out in 1981. He spent his childhood in Teaneck in New Jersey and attended the Teaneck High School. Only at the age of 15, he worked as a stock boy at Charivari (an avant-garde clothing boutique in New York City). Thereafter, he took admission in Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. During his study tenure at Parsons, Jacobs designed his first line of hand-knit sweaters and also sold them. His first collection was designed for Reuben Thomas, Inc., thereafter followed his dismissal episode in Perry Ellis in 1993. It was in 1986 that he designed his first collection having the Marc Jacobs label. Soon after in 1987, Jacobs was conferred upon ‘The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent’. He was the youngest designer to have received this award – one of the highest tribute in the fashion industry.

The prominence of the Marc Jacobs brand has increased of late with increasing number of boutiques and also direct point of service locations. The branded showrooms portray only part of the company's several brands (The Marc Jacobs Collection, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Little Marc, the children's line).

Controversy about Marc Jacobs


It was in February 2008, that Jacobs got accused of plagiarism. It came to the forefront that a scarf from his own collection bore the same design of a scarf which was created in the 1950s by Swedish designer Gösta Olofsson. It was later settled through monetary compensation.
