In 1984, the Tata Group and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) entered into a joint venture to form Titan Industries. With its quartz technology and international styling, the company brought about a paradigm shift in India's watch market. Having developed a clear understanding of the various segments in the watch market in due course of time, Titan launched a second independent brand of functionally styled watches at reasonable prices and named it "Sonata". In a few years, it came up with yet another brand, and this time, it was for the youth called "Fastrack".

The sheer growth of Titan industries has enabled it to acquire license for global brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss, and the first Swiss watch brand, Xylys in recent years. Today, Titan Industries has 3,800 employees working under it in its factories in Hosur, Dehradun, and Goa for watches, accessories, and jewelry line Tanishq, which is also, one of its recent ventures. It manufactures over 8 million watches a year for its customers that are 10 times bigger than its produce.

In India, Titan markets its products through its 222 exclusive showrooms named "The World of Titan", and over 12,000 outlets in over 2,500 cities in the country. In 1995, Titan ventured into the Indian jewelry market and established the brand - Tanishq. The collection introduced by the company focused on the urban households. This was followed by the launch of Gold Plus, the second jewelry brand from the house of Titan in 2005. This time, the company wished to capitalize the small towns and rural market of the country. The company has also entered other avenues in the fashion industry by launching Fastrack Eye-Gear, an exclusive range of sunglasses as well as prescribed eyewear consisting of frames and contact lenses in 2003.
