Established as a chain of clothing stores in Seattle in 1920, Eddie Bauer's Sport Shop, (as the company was then known), was the first independent company that the US Army sanctioned to use their logo on the army uniform.

The company had its headquarters in Washington and was a subsidiary of Eddie Bauer Holdings (that was previously known as Spiegel, Inc.).

In 1968, the company Eddie Bauer--the founder, retired and sold the company. General Mills took over Eddie Bauer, in 1971. Spiegel, Inc. took over the ownership of Eddie Bauer in 1988. Spiegel, Inc. faced bankruptcy but recovered under the name "Eddie Bauer Holdings" in May, 2005 with Commerzbank as its primary owner. It may be mentioned that Eddie Bauer went public in 2005.
