Origin of Sunglasses


The concept of sunglasses originated in the 19th and early 20 centuries when people suffering from syphilis were prescribed to wear spectacles with yellow, amber, and brown tint to avoid exposure to light (which was one of the symptoms of the disease).

However, sunglasses in their present came into existence in the early part of the 20th century, when they were referred to as 'sun cheaters' (or simply 'cheaters').

The initial popularity was delivered by the leading stars of the silent movies, which they used to hide their presence from their fans. It also protected their eyes from the powerful arc lights of those times.

But the introduction of sun-glasses as accessories of common men and women (besides shoes, jewelry, watches, and handbags) was done by Sam Foster in America in 1929. He started selling these on the beaches of Atlantic City and New Jersey under the name Foster Grant from a Woolworth on the Boardwalk.

In 1936, polarized sun-glasses came into the market following the experiments made by Edwin H. Land with his lenses with a Polaroid filter that he patented.

The sun glasses help to protect eyes from the damage caused by the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. They are also prescribed for patients to avoid infections after undergoing eye operations. For this, the manufacturers follow standards set by USA, Europe, and Australia as ANSI Z80.3-1972, EN 1836:2005, and AS 1067 respectively. Above all, sunglasses are used as fashion accessories by the fashion freaks. They are available in various shapes, sizes, and shades that are guided by the latest trends in the world of fashion.
