Lip piercing is a form of body piercing. Today, people go in for belly button piercing, eyebrow piercing, nose piercing, to name a few, in order to decorate their bodies differently. However, if piercing is done by a professional, then it would reduce the risk of infection or other complications to a large extent.

History of Lip Piercing

Lip piercing was first seen in Africa. Tribal people were seen with huge decorative lip discs and plates worn on the lower lip. Today, we can notice a number of youngsters as well as adults with lip piercing.

Types of Lip Piercing

Lips can be pierced all around the mouth. However, it is noticed that the lip surface is generally not pierced.

Some of the forms of lip piercing are:

  • Medusa piercing:

    The upper lip is pierced in the center.

  • Monroe piercing:

    This piercing is done on the exact position, where you would find the mole of Marilyn Monroe. It is also known as Madonna piercing as well.

  • Labrets:

    This piercing is done with the help of a labret stud. Usually, labret is pierced in the center or away from it.

Lip Piercing Care

  • After lip piercing is done, you should avoid smoking, drinking and eating for the first 3 hours.
  • You should also avoid tobacco, alcohol and drugs before and after lip piercing.
  • You should soak lip with saline water 2 times daily.
  • Before touching your lips, you must clean your hands with anti-bacterial soap.
  • You should use a soft bristled brush after lip piercing.
  • You could use Ibuprofen, which would reduce the redness and swelling of lips.
  • You take consume Vitamin B tablets with zinc, which would help is healing process.
