Body piercing, which is a practice of piercing a part of the body for wearing an ornament is a fashion trend that has been there since ancient times. Initially, it was a custom followed by certain classes, groups, or communities.

But with the passage of time, it became more and more popular as a fashion among people all over the world. In the 21st century, body piercing is one of the most fashionable traits of the younger generation and is being followed with utmost interest by the trendy and stylish individuals.

History of Piercing


Several evidences have been found that suggest that body piercing (particularly ear and nose piercing), was practiced from times unknown. Piercing has been discovered in mummified bodies. The Book of Genesis of the Bible 24:22 mentions the gold earring weighing half a shekel that was given by Abraham's servant to Rebekah, son Isaac's wife.

Piercing of body has been practiced as a part of religion, spirituality, conformism, sub-cultural identification, fashion, and even eroticism. Ear piercing was also considered to be a mark of slavery as mentioned in Deuteronomy 15:12–17. Nose piercing is said to have had its origin in India in the 16th century AD. In the west, piercing of one or both ears has long been practiced by men.

In America, Europe, and Australasia, ear piercing gained importance among the fashion conscious men and women from 1960 onwards. It created a sensation among the hippie, gay, and punk subcultures.

Piercing removal is a simple exercise but demands great precaution. The jewelry should be removed carefully; after this the hole also closes naturally. However, the jewelry should not be removed if one has an infection in the area, otherwise, it may result in an abscess.
